The Castle and the Nightlife

During the first week of break, some of my friends came to visit which was excellent for me. Jason and Ina joined me from UMass Amherst and Phil, Kendyl, and Marcel from Cornell.

We thought it was a church, but it turns out it's actually a restaurant. Jason and Ina prepare to enter the castle as William Wallace looks on. The imposing castle facade. Kendyl makes her way into the college. The full crew stands by the porticullis. A look through the arrow slits towards the town.

The cityscape from the castle. The gatehouse of the castle. Kendyl is taking a picture down in the lower left. Arthur's Seat from the castle. The full layout of Edinburgh. Phil mans the cannon as Marcel looks on. Jason and Ina make their way along the castle wall.

The whole city is within cannon shot! An amazing array of defensive weapons. Jason and Ina looking cute by the city. When old artillery won't do. The One O'Clock Gun fired every day. Guess when? A look West from the castle.

You can just barely see the suspension bridge across the Firth. Otherwise, the western part of Edinburgh. We're still wondering how they got the tank inside the castle. Jason and Ina in the castle. Mons Meg, the largest cannon built for the castle. No longer in active service. The old bakery which was temporarily used as prison cells. The mountains of the South.

Jason experiences the life of a prisoner in the castle (nicer than a dorm room). Marcel takes a shower in prison (surprisingly safe). Kendyl and Phil pose by Foog's Gate. The crew poses behind the shrine. Nice digs for the dogs. The crew poses by the cityscape.

St. Margaret's Chapel, the oldest building in all of Edinburgh. The Esplanade (currently serving as a parking lot) and Arthur's Seat in the background. Phil mounts the cannon! Kendyl and I compete for photographs. Ina and Kendyl pose in front of the shrine. The clock tower where the Honours of Scotland (the crown jewels) are kept. We enjoy a lovely packed lunch in the castle.

Kendyl poses in front of the Scottish Whiskey Heritage Center (aka the Disneyland of whiskey). Marcel and Phil enjoy pints of Guiness. Ina's freakish ability to spell things out in salt and sugar. Jason makes a political statement (it's just sugar and salt!)
